Largest Austin Employers

Although Austin is known for its high tech focus, the largest employers in the Austin area actually come from a wide variety of industries. Austin is home to the University of Texas and the main Texas State University campus is located just south of Austin in San Marcos. These two large universities still do not rival Austin Independent School District though which ranks in as Austin's largest employer. Austin ISD is one of the largest school districts in the state and serves about 86,000 students at 124 campuses around the Austin area.

Because Austin is the capital of Texas, there are naturally many government related jobs in the Austin area. Austin is also of course home to Dell Computers, and Dell's official headquarters are located just north of Austin in the Round Rock area.
